How to be the MacGyver of Social Video Marketing

I want you to feel like you’ve just discovered the Swiss army knife for attracting clients online with social video marketing.

How many people out there are MacGyver fans?

As you know, MacGyver’s the guy who could take a roll of duct tape and a paper clip and fix just about anything. What I want to do is show you how using live video can be the duct tape and paper clip fix for attracting all the clients you need.

The problem that I see is this: We’re all spending a lot of time engaging with people through social media, in our blog, sending out email and all of these different platforms take up all this extra time. It’s a big, big job to do and the more you look at Facebook and then you look at Twitter and then you look over at LinkedIn, the more it can feel overwhelming.

social videoI want to show you the cure for this. Here’s the MacGyver thing. You can be all over the place with social media and then somebody like me comes along as says, “Hey, I got an idea for you. Why don’t we make video?” And the first thing that’s popping into your head is, “Oh no! Not another thing. You mean I have to do video too?”

But if you use live video and you’re just using your phone, first of all you don’t need any other fancy gear – you already have a phone – and when you do the video, the only time it takes is the time to talk into your camera. And when you’re done, you’re really done. There’s no editing, there’s no post production, you don’t even have to upload it anywhere, it’s already up. And the cool thing is that because it’s up on a platform like Facebook – Facebook is where everybody is. Now you’re able to reach a very large and targeted group of people.

But this is where the duct tape comes in.

You can take that same piece of content – the same video – and repurpose it onto Youtube, your blog, into an email blast, on LinkedIn and even take the audio and turn it into a podcast. So, if you’re already blogging or if you’re already doing a podcast or if you already have a Youtube channel, you can start with a Facebook Live video and then use the same content on all your other platforms – and be everywhere in no time at all.

How to get comfortable in front of the camera doing live video

How do you get comfortable in front of the camera? How do you learn to love the way you show up doing live video?

Today I’m going to talk about the one thing I’m hearing most often from people that’s really holding them back from making video and especially from making live video. People are telling me again and again that they really just don’t like the way they look on camera, or they don’t like the way they sound on camera. They say, “Well I made a video and I looked at myself and you know what? I just don’t think I look that great.”

What I’m going to address is how do you learn to love the way you show up when you’re in front of the camera?

In front of the cameraWhen I was a little kid I was living in a house where all the mirrors all over the house were way up high, way above my head. By age 3 or age 4 I didn’t actually know what I looked like. At the time I had this really positive self image. In fact my hero was the western TV star Michael Landon. You probably remember Michael Landon from the show, “Little House on the Prairie.” But I remember him from an earlier western that was called, “Bonanza” and he was really handsome and he was really cool and I thought he was the best thing ever. I wanted to be like him. I wanted to be Michael Landon. And I thought that I looked like Michael Landon.

One day I went into our big bathroom and I climbed up onto the rim of our clawfoot bathtub and from there I climbed up onto the sink and above the sink there was a bathroom mirror. I stood up on the sink and balanced myself and I could see myself in the mirror…

And what I saw was this little kid with a completely shaved head and this really big forehead and a really tiny, scrunched face. I did not look anything like Michael Landon and I was horrified.

I went down, with tears in my eyes and found my mother in the kitchen. She remembers this story and actually tells this story over and over. To her credit and great wisdom she took me out bought a mirror – a big nice mirror with a wooden frame – and she hung it in my bedroom at my height so that when I got up in the morning my mirror was there. When I got dressed in the morning, I could stand in front of the mirror and get dressed. And every day I would see myself and over and over in this practice of looking in the mirror and seeing myself, I got really used to who I was. In fact not only did I get used to who I was, I really fell in love with my reflection and who I was.

Honestly, I used to do stuff like dance in front of the mirror and then I would hold up a hair brush and pretend it was a microphone. And I would sing rock songs in front of the mirror. And I became a rockstar – to myself. And my reflection of me was rockstar.

This really works. Anyone can do this. I’m sure you’ve had some experience of looking at yourself in the mirror and feeling that self love. And if you haven’t, trust me, try it. This is a life skill. With this kind of practice, you can learn to love how you show up in the mirror.

The really good news is that right now, with all of these rectangular smartphone things, we now carry a mirror in our pocket everywhere we go. And there’s nothing better or easier that you can do than pull out your phone, turn on the camera, (remember to turn is sideways) and hit record. And talk to yourself. You don’t have to try and broadcast anywhere, but just make a recording and then look at that recording. And then tomorrow do it again. And the next day keep on going. With this practice, the same as what I experienced growing up, you will not only get used to look and the way you show up and the way you sound, but you will learn to love the way you look and sound. You’ll actually learn to love the person who your are when you’re showing up.

The other good news – and this is specifically to doing live video – when you go live no one out there expects you to be perfect. They don’t expect you to be a rockstar. They expect you to be yourself. And the more you show up as yourself, the more they are going to resonate with you. What happens is that you go live and people go, “I like this!” I promise you by doing this, by pulling out your phone, hitting record, going live, people will like your thing, they will comment, they will say, “You’re awesome!” And what will happen is that you’ll start believing it.

You’ll be thinking, “Wow! People think I’m awesome.”

Over time you will start feeling, “I am really doing something. I’m showing up as who I am. I’m offering people something that is valuable to them and they’re appreciating it.” And that’s as far as you need to go. The more you do that the more you realize you are doing it.

The 4 Essential Ingredients that make Awesome Videos

I’ve been following lots of teachers online and all of them come up with these simple learning things where they teach you 3 tips or 4 tricks or 5 essentials, and each of the things they teach you start with the same letter. So they’ll offer the 4 P’s or the 5 L’s…

I decided that I wanted to do that myself so in this video I’ve come up with the 4 I’s: The Essential Ingredients to Awesome Videos. And I want you to put in the comments below whether you think this kind of thing is helpful or hokey. Here are the 4 essential ingredients that you need in every single video that you make.

The very first ingredient is Intent. What’s your intention? What’s your reason for making the video? And most importantly, what do you want the people who are watching the video to do? And this is different than what do you want them to learn or what do you want them to understand. You want to think of this as an experience for them. They really want to get some kind of experiential, emotional value from watching your video. So, when they see the video, then they will do something. That’s your intent. What are they going to do after they watch your video?

Then you want to intrigue them. Basically, intrigue is all about selling them the idea of watching your video. At the beginning of the video above I was trying to intrigue you by saying, “I’ve got 4 ingredients.” And now you’re thinking, “Well I wonder what they could possibly be. I know they all start with the letter I, but I don’t know what they are!” Hopefully that intrigues you enough to watch it all the way through. So at the very beginning you have to do something very intriguing to catch their attention.

The third thing is Insight. You want to share your insight. What’s the thing that you know that they don’t? Usually what you’re doing when you’re making a video is you’re solving a problem. And you’re solving a problem for the people who are watching. If they knew how to solve the problem, they’d already be doing it. So, there is something that you know that’s going to help them. You have an insight and that is the main content of your video.

Last but not least, is share your inspiration. You want to inspire them at the end of your video to take action. Cajole them. Inform them. Give them ideas. Give them a very specific call to action so that they will then go do the thing that you want them to do.

So there you have it. The four essential ingredients of every single video: Intent, Intrigue, Insight and Inspire to Action.

3 Best Ways to Make Awesome Video for Your Business

Wondering how to make video without taking a lot of time? Here’s my 3 step strategy which will guide you in the best ways to make video for your business.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: you’re thinking, “Oh video! That’s too much trouble. That’s gonna take way too much time!”

So let’s be honest.

There are lots of ways that you can make video that are really time consuming.

But today, I’m going to show you a system – three simple steps – so that you can put your video out there and you can be sure that you’re going to get a good response from all the effort that you put into making your video.

Sound good?

Step #1 is that you start by going live on Facebook. Now why do you do that? It’s because of reach. You’re going to be able to reach all your friends and all your followers on Facebook because that is where they already are.

Facebook loves live video.

And it rewards you when you make a live video by giving you this huge reach. So, you make a video and it’s typically going to reach out to about 1,000 people – and out of those 1,000 people, several hundred of them will watch your video. That’s the reward that Facebook gives you – every single time.

The real reason to start with live is because it’s easy. The time that it takes you to go live is all the time it takes to make your video. When you’re done, you’re done. There’s no post production, there’s no editing. You don’t even have to upload it anywhere. It’s already live.

If you’re wondering about how do you make video without taking a lot of time or going to a lot of trouble: go onto Facebook. Use the Facebook app. Go live. Press the button, and you’re done!

OK, so what’s step #2?

After you go live, you take that same video and you add a nice introduction that’s been pre-recorded that says, “Hello, I’m this person and I do this thing and today this is what we’re going to talk about.” And put that at the beginning of your video.

At the end, take another section that’s a pre-recorded video that says, “Thanks so much for watching and make sure that after you watch you do this thing that I want you to do.” And give them a call to action.

You take those two parts and you just bolt them onto your video with an editing tool like iMovie – and upload this longer video onto Youtube.

Now why do you upload onto Youtube? Because when you’re on Youtube, now you’re going to get search. On Facebook you get reach, but you don’t get any search. People aren’t going to search for you on Facebook and find you by searching. But they will search for the problem that you solve in your video or the answer to the question that they have that’s in your video. And they go onto Google or they go onto Youtube and they look for the answer you’re providing, and if you have a video on that subject, they can find you and watch your video. So you get more views this way.

And this keeps going on forever when you have a video on Youtube. The unfortunate thing about Facebook is that it gives you great reach but has a short shelf life. Your video goes up but within 24 hours that’s kind of it. It’s not going to get a lot more views. But as soon as you put it on Youtube, it has a shelf life that lasts for a really long time.

Step #3 is you take that video – the same video – and embed it onto your blog. You reach out to your email list and say, “Hey, I just made this great video for you!” Put a little thumbnail picture of the video in the email and you get them to click through and go to your blog post and watch it.

That will create the same kind of search index for people coming to your blog and coming to your website – where you can engage them further. If they’re new visitors, you can invite them to join your email list.

These three steps:

  1. Start with FB live (big reach!!)(no time!!) – do something actionable – people are looking for results – you want to give them the experience of getting the results they’re looking for…
  2. Post on youtube (search!!)(long shelf life!!)
  3. Post on your blog (web site) add bonus content that people can download (grow your email list) bing!!!

3 Simple Steps to Awesome Video Storytelling

What are the 3 essential steps to good video storytelling? And which one do you think is the #1 thing that most people completely miss?

Hopefully, I’ve just modeled the first basic step to good video storytelling which is…

1. Grab your audience’s attention

You’ve only got 10 seconds to grab people’s attention – so give them a challenge, ask them a question or just share something you’re curious about – and, hopefully, they’ll be curious about too.

Basically, you’re selling them, you’re convincing them, to watch the rest of your video.

2. Give them your story

Step number two is to give them the content you promised at the start. In this case you want to tell your story. And your story wants to be about the challenge that you described and the struggle that it takes to overcome that challenge. Talk about struggle. Talk about pain. Talk about the people in your audience that you’re talking to and their struggle and the kinds of things that they need to do to overcome this challenge. Those kinds of solutions will be very helpful for them and they’ll see that as high value.

3. Galvanize with a call to action – at the end of your video.

This is the one thing that many people completely miss when they’re working with video. When they tell a story on video, they don’t think to give a good strong call to action at the end. So don’t miss this essential step.

Making a video like this is the exact opposite of the perfectionist’s method of spending hours planning your shots and then more hours tweaking the edits. It takes Kaitlin less than five minutes to create a new video start to finish.

And while this works great for a yoga instructor like Kaitlin – imagine the many, short, 15-second videos you could make showing visual parts of your work. Whatever reasons you’ve been hanging onto for why you aren’t yet making your own videos: “it’s too complicated,” “it takes too much time,” “i don’t have the right equipment,” this leaves you with no excuse. Everyone has a smartphone with a video camera – and everyone has ten minutes to put one of these together.

Sometimes lessons in what it takes to help your business grow come from the most unlikely places.

I used to work for Outward Bound. Every morning we jumped in the ocean. It was always cold. Really cold. And yet we made everyone take the plunge. There was only one way to get used to it.

Do it every day.

At first it seemed like maybe this really wasn’t such a good idea. But by jumping in every day, it became normal. We didn’t just turn it into a daily practice, we made jumping in the ocean part of our cultural identity. When we each agreed to take the plunge, we became members of a tribe who were people of the water. We jumped in every day because we now believed that this was how we how we thrived.

It sounds crazy. It was crazy. No matter the weather, no matter how cold, we jumped in all the way.

Getting your feet wet as a daily practice

Since then I’ve seen first hand how developing a regular practice of ‘getting your feet wet’ works really well for growing your business.

We tend to develop our new stuff in a closet. Musicians call this ‘woodshedding’ – as in a long period of practicing your instrument out back in the wood shed so no one can see or hear you until you’re good enough.

This is not the way to grow your thriving enterprise. If you spend six months developing your next big project on your own, you may well find that you’ve spent all that time on something that no-one cares about.

You need to take the plunge with your new projects.

Jump in – get your feet wet – every day. I know. You’re not quite ready yet. It could be really cold!!

But, if you share some small part of what you’re working on you’ll get feedback right away.

Show Your Work

You may have noticed that this site is all about making videos. So what can you do with video as a daily practice?

You can show your work.

It’s all about reaching out to those you want to connect with. And you know what? If you start sharing part of your work each day you’ll actually start changing your identity. You’ll move from someone who’s thinking about doing something to someone who’s doing stuff.

The art of a daily share-your-work practice is about experimenting your way to success – to stop planning and start acting.

If you’re thinking about plunging in yourself you may be wondering what exactly does it look like?

Here are some helpful guidelines:

1. Plunging has three goals: showcase your creative process, share your vision, learn something from your audience.
2. It gets your feet wet right now. There’s no waiting around. Take a deep breath and… jump.
3. It’s simple.
4. It gets your blood going & moves you out of your comfort zone.
5. It puts you out there in front of your audience.
6. It’s an opportunity for growth.

Sharing early, messy versions of your work can be scary – you will meet your resistance – and you may find your audience doesn’t want what you’re creating.

But that’s how you learn.

And better to learn quickly, with others engaged with you along the way so you can jump in again. (if you fall off your horse, the best thing is to get right back up in the saddle again)

What plunging is not

1. It’s not deciding something. It’s deciding and then doing it.
2. It’s not staying in the closet. It puts you in front of your audience.
3. It’s not about sharing only with your friends and family. You need to jump out in front of the people you most want to impact and serve.
4. It’s not taking a class. You want to be sharing your gifts with the world. Now!

The benefits to getting your feet wet? You’ll avoid costly mistakes. You’ll learn what really works. You’ll do something now. Think for a moment about what getting your feet wet looks like for you. What action can you take that meets the six stages of plunging above?

How to Achieve Inconceivable* Live Video Success

Sometimes we can feel like our social media stuff is getting way out of hand. Trying to pay attention to Facebook and Twitter and Youtube and LinkedIn and Instagram and your blog, posting on all those platforms, is overwhelming.

It can feel like you’re traveling in six different directions – and it’s a bit of a gerbil wheel because it’s often hard to tell what kind of results you’re getting.

So, recently I decided to take a different approach.

What if I focussed all of my online activities to support things I’m doing offline – in the real world? After all, the main goal of all this online marketing is to actually meet people and start working with them, yes?

I started experimenting with Facebook Live and just last week I achieved inconceivable* live video success…!

I’m now hosting two live events each month and each event has guest speakers. So, my new content marketing strategy has evolved to do weekly interview with a guest of an upcoming event on Facebook Live – where they can share actionable content. We talk about the guest and invite people to come to the next event.

The live feed can be shared with the guest’s audience on Facebook in addition to my own – so I’m able to reach new people with every broadcast.

I wanted to share early results from this experiment (see video above) because it’s doing even better than I expected.

Live Video Success

live video successIn this recent interview I was talking with Digital Marketer Taylor Kloss via Skype and doing a live broadcast of our conversation. Here’s what happened: this video reached 390 people and the video had 225 views.

I had a specific call to action which was to invite people to my Big Idea Lab event (which was the first thing I said at the start) – so I have a pretty clear idea that 225 people actually saw, heard or watched my invitation!

Let’s compare this to an earlier post I did to announce the same event, which was a regular post with an image. It had a reach of only 6 people and there’s no way to tell if any of those people even noticed the invitation.

Clearly Facebook likes live video and will reward you when you make one by showing it to more people.

But it gets better.

I can take the same video and upload it to Youtube and post it on LinedIn and share a screenshot on Instagram (and tag Taylor) and post a link to it on Twitter (and tag Taylor). And, like I’m doing right now, turn it into a blog post and then send it out via email.

This is no longer doing six different things all going in six different directions. One piece of content that took 10 minutes to produce. And it’s in support of growing my community in the real world!

Did it work? As of this writing the next Big Idea Lab has 43 people registered. Which, as far as I’m concerned is a huge success!

4 steps to create an outstanding video profile that connects

Libby Kirkpatrick is a singer-songwriter and massage therapist who recently moved from Austin to Boston. She was interested in setting up her massage therapy practice in the Cambridge area and, as someone who just moved to the area, she needed to attract an entirely new group of clients. We combined both her talents in this authentic video profile of her work.

Then we created a video profile branding plan that allowed her to combine her talents and give her an immediate entrée to likely clients in the area. Her new massage practice is in a rented treatment room housed at a yoga studio – where there are a dozen yoga instructors teaching classes to a few hundred students each month.

To introduce herself to the community she offered to play and sing for Savasana at the end of yoga classes. (Savasana is the last pose done for every class in which students lay on the floor in a resting meditation). Because the yoga teachers where she practices also teach at several other studios in the Cambridge area – she also offered to sing at the same teachers’ classes at their other locations in Cambridge.

With this plan, in just a few weeks, she was be able to introduce herself to literally hundreds of local yoga students – her perfect target population as folks likely to be interested in a massage therapy session. Then she invited them in for a free assessment session – and followed up with a multi-session package offer. Anyone interested could visit her site and schedule a time for their free session online. This was a very simple-to-get-started strategy that gave Libby high visibility, and meaningful connection, with a group of her most likely clients.
